Keynote Speech: Immersive technologies in higher education:Exploring new pedagogies or consolidating teaching approaches?
Immersive technologies, such as virtual reality, simulations, and games, can be helpful tools to integrate real-life contexts into higher education programmes under guided conditions and without the constraints of time and space. Immersive technologies provide students in higher education with feelings of being immersed in a particular context and the perceptual experience of ‘being there’. These feelings of immersion and presence play an important role in learning, increasing students’ attention, level of commitment, participation, and motivation. Immersive technologies lead students to engage emotionally and react instinctively to an alternate reality. Due to these advantages, immersive technologies provide students with an effective opportunity to observe, interact with, and reflect on complex real-life situations without direct real-life experiences. In this keynote, research on virtual and augmented reality, games and gamification, and other types of simulations will be presented from various higher education domains. The keynote will address the question of whether new pedagogies are needed to support these immersive technologies or whether teaching approaches can be applied no matter which technology is used.
